Watching recorded games is the best way to improve your game and start winning on ESO. Friday, 3 October, 2003 – Planet Age of Empires News 8:23 PST. Unfortunately I'm not creative enough to come up with a catchy title so I'll just mimic Xiphoid's.:) The Titans is a good deal of fun so far, so let me get up a few of my better games. On my computer the Savegame folder was now in my profile's My Documents or something as opposed to in my main AOM directory, not sure if thats because I'm on a new computer or if its the expansion pack. Anyways, on to the games: VagabondBoyBlue is one of the top ladder players at the moment and has developed a very nice looking Kronos game so far. I would not recommend watching my Isis game as its pretty much gone down the tubes. I made some large mistakes and had a very shakey economy.
Even so it was a fun game. BoyBlue makes use of Timeshift well, using it to build a forward base on me. Early on my Slingers manage to overcome his Turmas, but as he switches unit production to Murmillos my economy couldn't hand the food shift to Axemen, and I was stuck in Heroic. Titans certainly put the nail in the coffin.:) Xiphoid and I face off in our first game together in the Titans.
I've been playing Kronos mostly so far, though without any defined build orders or plans, though now I think I'll try to incorporate some of BoyBlue's playstyle into my own - rather then just Turma massing. For the record in classic AOM Xiphoid would usually slaughter me in our games.:) This was a fun team game with forumer Darkside on my team. I was once again playing Kronos, Darkside (FrozenFire) was Odin, Graveyard and cyclone were Thor/Kronos, respectively.
This game was on one of the new random maps, Marsh, which will likely become a favorite on ESO. It has a good deal of hunting, and reminds me of Watering Hole, though it places more emphasis on controlling the center of the map. This was a very fun game, and very close too. If you watch it to the end though, you'll probably see one of the most amazing saves ever. Darkside cast Frost on a Norse army constructing a Titan Gate - and the construction was halted at 99% completion.
Talk about timing.:)Back to ESO! Thursday, 2 October, 2003 – Planet Age of Empires News 15:09 PST. The World Cyber Games has a helpful page up listing all of the WCG finalists' names and nationality. In total, there are 28 finalists from countries around the world, including some names that are there every year like Grunt from Korea and Halen from Japan. MFO's Swinger recently the lead designer of the Titans expansion, Ian Fischer, and asked him about twenty questions on his occupation at ES, the making of the Titans and any future games. The interview is a great read and I think it proves that the guys in charge at ES really do care about the games they make and put a lot into it. Here is one of the questions: Swinger: Was making the X-pac easier or more difficult than AoM?
Ian Fischer: The expansion pack required a lot less time and fewer people and we started with an established engine, game model, and tools, so it's hard not to see it as being 'easier'. Still, it had it's share of challenges. For example, it took us a lot longer to dream up new god powers and myth units than we expected - we forgot how many of these we had to concoct, try, and reject during Age of Mythology before we got the few that we liked. If you're experiencing an error in LAN games with the new patch where your IP address is shown as '0.0.0.0', check out Ensemble's Matt 'matty' Scadding's post and you can learn how to get in touch with him to help ES squash the bug. Just a general note on bugs: if you have any third-party software installed with Age of Mythology, whether it be enhanced tooltips, a no-cd patch, etc, the Titans expansion and the new AOM patch may not function correctly. ES is getting a ton of complaints from people on bugs and it ends up that it isn't their fault at all since there is no way they can anticipate which extra programs people are going to use or modify the game with. GameSpot has the Titans expansion today, giving it a mediocre grade of 83%.
The review is two-pages long and goes over the additions of the game. I couldn't really figure out why the author didn't rate the game higher, as the only negative comment he gave was 'you'll notice that it offers about a third of the original game's content (one civilization, whereas Age of Mythology has three) for a majority of the original game's price'. Sounds like someone forgot this was titled beforehand as an expansion and not a full game. Here is a brief portion from the review: If you look at Age of Mythology: The Titans by the numbers, you'll notice that it offers about a third of the original game's content (one civilization, whereas Age of Mythology has three) for a majority of the original game's price. Granted, it's not like the new content in The Titans exists in a vacuum. There's plenty more depth to be found here since having a brand-new civilization with three new primary gods creates many more potential matchups, which in turn sets up distinct, new strategies. On the other hand, it would have been nice to see the original civilizations get fleshed out some more in this expansion pack, not because there were any noticeable holes in their design, but just because experienced Age of Mythology players will want more than just one big reason to keep playing as their favorite factions.
Nevertheless, The Titans is still a great game at its core, and it's recommendable to any fan of Age of Mythology, particularly those who liked the idea of the game but maybe had trouble getting over the learning curve. Wednesday, 1 October, 2003 – Planet Age of Empires News 19:04 PST. Some folks are receiving odd errors with the new 1.07 patch for Age of Mythology, including run-over text and empty maps. ES' Matt 'matty' Scadding posted this in our forums: If you are having the bug where, when you log on to ESO all the text for buttons is overflowing the right half of the button, and games go OOS immediately after launch while you are looking at a black map, we have identified two possible workarounds.
Try putting '+disableUPnP' on the command line of your AOM shortcut (or alternatively, make a plain text file called user.cfg in your startup subdirectory, and put only the text +disableUPnP on a line by itself in that file). Try setting your regional settings to English. We still are having a devil of a time reproducing this problem in house but either of these work arounds appear to work for some users that are encountering this problem in 1.07.
Super kudos to all those who have lent a hand. If you are just going OOS on startup occasionally and the world is not all black when it happens, and you see your rating in the Quick Launch screen in the form '1600.000' instead of '1600,000' then you probably were just unfortunately getting matched up with people suffering from this problem, but do not have it yourself. The Titans expansion has received another great, this time from the gaming site, GameZone, who gave the game an extremely strong 9.4 out of 10 rating. In fact, AOM:T is the highest rated reviewed game on the site and the staff there had a lot of nice things to say about the game. Here is the site's synopsis on the game: Overall: 9.4 Age of Mythology: The Titans is a must have expansion pack! This game provides another captivating story that will not let players go until they find out what happens in the end!
If you own Age of Mythology you owe it to yourself to pick up this expansion pack as soon as possible! Game Over has a page-long of the Titans up. It's pretty basic, but if you're looking for all of the info you can get in order to make a purchasing decision, go for it. Here's a blip: The animation that Age of Mythology featured was rather impressive for an RTS, but The Titans improves upon the models for the game even more. Combat animation is slick and natural during assaults on enemy units or buildings. Cutscenes are nicely done as well.
The music has been augmented as well, and along with solid voice acting, The Titans delivers a spectacular atmospheric performance. With an early look at this title, Age of Mythology should create new legends of its own when it hits shelves this Tuesday. Check back here soon for a full review! Games Domain has given Age of Mythology: The Titans its 'Top Game' award and also a five out of five rating in its of the game. The author of the review deems the game as a 'must buy' and thoroughly enjoyed the game. Here are his concluding words: Whether you're a casual single-player real-time strategy fan or addicted to the multiplayer mayhem, The Titans is a must buy.
It features the same spit and polish and attention to detail found in all Ensemble RTS games. The Titans proves that Ensemble still has myths and stories to tell.
The NPDTechWorld has the numbers of the top ten selling PC games in the US for the week of September 20 and unfortunately, Age of Mythology didn't make the cut as it did a few weeks ago. The reason for this is the resurgence of Battlefield 1942 up the charts because of its new expansion and a new Star Wars Jedi Knight title. The first reviews are starting to come in and IGN is out of the gates quickly, reviewing the Titans and giving the expansion a very nice 8.9 out of 10 rating. Thanks to Weezer for the heads up. Here was the reviewer's concluding paragraph about the game, which he was undoubtedly impressed with: I had an absolute blast playing this game again. While you'll get around a dozen hours with the new single-player campaign, there are more than enough multiplayer options to keep you busy.
But even if you never venture online, the $30 asking price is more than enough to justify the new units and new missions for fans of the game. Since it's unlikely that you've read this far without already being somewhat interested in the game to begin with, that's as good an endorsement as you're likely to get. My friend Socvazius has posted a nice of the Titans expansion at Age of Mythology Heaven. The review is three-pages long and covers most facets of the game. According to Soc, and I can definitely back him up here, the game is above expectations and he gave the game a 9.7 out of 10 rating.
Here is a portion of his review: But balance is only one aspect of multiplayer gaming; fun factor plays a huge part in it as wellunderstandable, since this is a game. The addition of the Atlanteans and Titans adds a whole new level of fun to the AoM, and its replayability is sent through the roof. It just goes without saying how much fun it is to see an enormous Titan smash through whole armies or watching a pack of Arcus Heroes mow down advancing infantry formations. Today's Ensemble Studios question and answer session and giveaway was a huge success, with eighty posts in the started by Matt 'matty' Scadding in just an hour, dozens of questions answered by the ES guys and some very nice prizes handed out including some free copies of the Titans. We'd like to express a big thanks to the three ES employees who took part in the event, starting with matty, Brian 'Vega' Dellinger and Nicolas 'MoonGoat' Currie and last but not least, Mike 'Archangel' McCart for organizing it. Here were some of ES' responses: saturninus - Do you see any big innovations coming up in RTS, or is the genre going to stay pretty similar as time goes on, only with nicer graphics? ESVega - Of course, we're always woring on new things.
Unfortunately i cant give any details at this time, but you all are going to be really suprised in what we have in store for you. Stabn - What did you find to be the hardest units or techs to balance in the atlanteans? ESVega - I think the hardest new units were the Atlantean MU's, especially lampades. This unit is just like medusa but instead of a insta kill, lampades turns the unit to gaia which means it will attack any unit it sees. This was such a pain to balance.
Hope - My question is, why tone down norse so much? And boost egypt? I think that egypt is way on top of the stack, with norse close behind. ESmatty - Hope, free t-shirt (get on msn and send me your info) for an excellent and very difficult question to answer! To make a long story short again, egypt has also lost some of their ommph, i believe ancestors is weakened on water, ancestors now do less damage to heroes, and the egyptian ram has been toned down. On top of that the shooting docks also help to take down some of the power of egypt on the water. I think serpents were weakened for some reason as well.
On top of this the change to getting the free MU make it a lot tougher on eggy. ESOnline is currently down for maintenance, most likely to get the service ready for the release of the Titans today. There isn't a time listed for it to be back up, but hopefully it'll return in an hour or two. I doubt ES would go home for the night on the release day without fixing the service. I logged onto the service last night for a minute and saw that they hadn't cleared the stats from the playtesting games so that's probably one of the things they're doing.
Monday, 29 September, 2003 – Planet Age of Empires News 19:25 PST. PC GAME FIXES Age Of Mythology for related No-CD & No-DVD Patch No-CD & No-DVD Patch troubleshooting: The most common problem getting a No-CD/No-DVD patch to work is ensuring that the No-CD/No-DVD patch matches you're game version, because the games exe is changed when a patch update is applied previous versions won't work. If its an older game you are playing and you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8 it may not work, if you right click the.exe file and choose Properties and then Compatibility you can change this to run in Windows 98/ Windows 2000 etc. You can find more information on the Beginners Help page.
